Four crimes that shook Krugersdorp this year
From burning a body in a vehicle to serial killers robbing children of their parents, 2016 has been one of the worst years with regard to murders.
This year, 2016, has seen some of the worst crimes ever committed – from corrupt police officers to multiple horrific family murders.
Throughout South Africa, the media has reported on heinous and disturbing discoveries of people who had died in unforeseen circumstances. In some cases the perpetrators were caught either on camera or by vigilant protection services personnel.
Krugersdorp has also seen some of the worst cases ever being heard in its magistrates’ court. These are four of the worst cases the News has reported on this year.
August marked the start of Women’s Month in South Africa. It also marked the month in which the worst female-related crimes occurred. The crime that received ample media attention and public scrutiny was of a woman whose body was burnt beyond recognition in the boot of her vehicle. The vehicle was set on fire allegedly by her boyfriend. The suspect is yet to be sentenced.

Another more recent crime that shocked Krugersdorp was the case in late November of a man who allegedly kidnapped his daughter and threatened to kill her and himself. He picked up the three-year-old and two of her friends and later returned the friends. When he received a call from the distressed mother he told her he would kill the child if she contacted the police.

A father of two was also murdered recently, but what made this case so shocking was that he was shot in front of his wife and child. The robbers allegedly entered their home in Protea Ridge, Krugersdorp, took him into a room and shot him, only to flee the premises with a TV and some cash. No arrests have been made yet.

The worst crimes committed in Krugersdorp that received so much public scrutiny and media attention throughout the year was the Krugersdorp triple murder case. Hanle Lategan, Kevin McAlpine and Anthony Scholefield were murdered in a series of violent and shocking crimes in May this year.
Since the arrest of the first suspect it was discovered the group of alleged serial killers murdered more than just these three victims. It is believed that the five have killed more than 11 people over a course of three years. They are also accused of murdering a homeless man to cover up the fake death of one of their alleged members to claim a life insurance policy to the value of an estimated R3,2 million. The deaths of the victims left wives widowed. McAlpines’ pregnant wife was left to give birth to their son who would spend his life without his biological father.
