The first day of school can be a breeze
Be as prepared as possible for the before school morning routine.
Starting school can be one of the most difficult days your child has to think about.
Every child is hesitant to go somewhere new and interact with a bunch of complete strangers. Keep in mind that children may find it hard to think ahead about future events in terms of weeks and months, and be as prepared as possible for the before school morning routine.
Here are some helpful ways to prepare your children for their first day of school:
• Inform your child about what his day will be like, when school starts and at what time you will come and fetch him
• Ask your child to share his feelings towards starting school – both the excitement and the concerns
• Visit the school with your child to see his new classroom and meet his new teacher before school officially starts
• Point out the positive aspects, such as the fun of making new friends
• Let your child know that all children are nervous about the first day of school
• Assure your child that if any problems arise at school, you will be there to help resolve them
• Try to have your child meet a classmate before the first day of school so he will already have a friend when school starts
• Find out about after-school activities that your child can join
You will have your own emotional responses to your child starting school, so it might be helpful to have spent some time considering the suggestions for supporting yourself and your family.
