A 38-year-old suspect was arrested on Saturday, 14 January at about 2.30pm after he allegedly hit his girlfriend on her head with an axe.
It is alleged the suspect and his girlfriend, who is the complainant, lived together. The complainant went to their residence to collect her belongings at about 10.30am that same day. There the suspect approached the complainant and started to push her around while insulting her.
The suspect allegedly demanded that the complainant leave her television set and became so aggressive that she felt threatened. She decided to run to a nearby house for safety.
The suspect followed her into their neighbour’s yard where he forced open the door. Upon entering the house, the suspect allegedly struck his girlfriend with an axe at the back of her head. The complainant sustained an open wound to her head and was rushed to hospital. The suspect also sustained an injury during the attack and went to the same hospital as the complainant.
The relatives of the complainant spotted the suspect in the casualty area of the hospital and contacted the police. The police arrived moments later and arrested the suspect. He was admitted to hospital, but remained under police guard.
The suspect was later charged with attempted murder and was expected to appear in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court after he being discharged from hospital.
