Dagga worth millions seized by police

Krugersdorp Police seized dagga worth millions on a property in Kromdraai on 21 January.
The West Rand Trio Task team discovered the large plantation while following up on information regarding house robberies. They escalated the information to the National Intelligence headquarters in an effort to locate the owner of the property. Subsequently they returned to the property with a team of police, the K9 unit, volunteers and the Randfontein and Krugersdorp (sector 5 and sector 3) Community Police Forums (CPF) with a search warrant which enabled them to enter the premises.
It took the Police and CPF members about five hours to seize almost 8 000 dagga plants, with an estimated street value of R3 million.

Major General Anna Mateisi, station commander for the West Rand Cluster Police, expressed her gratitude towards everyone who was involved in this endeavour and said she was impressed with the way the CPF and the police worked together.
“Your commitment and dedication is highly appreciated. Your efforts in reducing the availability of illegal substances are noted. Keep it up,” General Mateisi said.
She also said the volunteers and CPF members made their work much easier and commended the fact that people were making themselves available for this back-breaking task.
Even though dagga will be rescheduled to a Schedule 6 drug, is still illegal to plant, distribute and sell the substance. In a previous press release regarding the destruction of dagga, Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the West Rand Cluster police said as long as dagga remains an illegal substance, the police will confiscate and destroy it.
