Suspects posing as flower merchants arrested
During further investigation the police discovered one of the suspects was formerly employed as a gardener at the complainant's house.
Kagiso police have arrested three suspects aged between 25 and 31 in Swaneville after they allegedly assaulted and robbed a woman in her house on 21 December 2016.
It is believed the female complainant was at her house in the area at about 10am that day, when she was approached by three unknown men, one of whom had his hair in dreadlocks.
The suspects allegedly knocked at her gate and once they had her attention, pretended that they were selling garden flowers. The suspects begged the complainant to buy some of their flowers and even promised they would plant them for her. The complainant fell for their scheme and let them in. The complainant went into the house shortly after they started planting the flowers. The suspects stopped and used another entrance to gain access to the house. They approached the complainant, assaulted her and bound her hands. They asked her where her safe was and because she succumbed to the pressure, she pointed them in the right direction. The suspects proceeded to open the safe and steal its contents – a firearm, jewellery and an undisclosed amount of money. They then fled the scene.
The complainant reported the incident to Kagiso Police who launched an investigation to track the perpetrators. The police found the three suspects on Friday, 13 January and cornered them in Swaneville.
During further investigation, the police discovered one of the suspects was formerly employed as a gardener at the complainant’s house. The suspects made a brief appearance in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court a few days after their arrest and on charges of house robbery. They were remanded in custody for their bail applications.
