A woman was robbed at about 7.15pm in Quellerie Park on Monday, 6 February. She was walking alone, on her way home from work.
“A man was running down the street, but I did not pay him any attention as he did not look suspicious. Next thing I knew he’d approached me swiftly and pushed me to the ground. I started screaming loudly and he ordered me to shut up,” said the young woman, who is still traumatised.
“I didn’t stop screaming as I was hoping that someone would hear the noise and try to help, because this happened in between the houses. My screaming angered the man who attacked me, so he pulled out a knife, then we wrestled over my handbag (containing my wallet, cellphone, a pair of shoes, and my work uniform),” said the 26-year-old woman.
Fearing for her life, she decided to let go of the handbag and the culprit ran away. The victim is grateful that she was not physically harmed in the ordeal, but refused to report the matter to the police.
“It was dark, I could not even see his face so I cannot describe him, and everything happened so fast. Going to the police will not help me get the things I lost back, and I won’t be able to assist them with the little information I have regarding what happened,” the victim said.
Following this incident, the News spoke to Captain Anastacia Maruping of Kagiso Police Station, who reiterated the importance of reporting a crime.
“As a resident of the country you have a right to safety and a responsibility to report every crime to your nearest police station, no matter how little information you have. You never know what could lead to the culprit’s arrest, but remaining quiet perpetuates the crime,” Maruping said.
