Hijacked victim rescued by police
The response team followed the suspicious vehicle and a high-speed car chase ensued.
Members of Joburg’s Metro Police Tactical Response team have rescued a man who was believed to have been hijacked then kidnapped in Krugersdorp on Thursday, 16 February.
The team was on duty, patrolling Impala Road in Krugersdorp, when they spotted a suspicious vehicle. The vehicle allegedly drove into oncoming traffic to avoid the police who were on duty in the area.
The response team and police started following the vehicle and a high-speed car chase ensued. They chased the vehicle onto a gravel road near Braamfischerville in Soweto.
While chasing this vehicle, they saw a man whose hands were tied, at the side of the road. They stopped and inquired as to what had happened. He told them he’d been hijacked at knife-point in Krugersdorp by six suspects who took his company vehicle and drove off.
The response members continued chasing the vehicle and later found it abandoned at the side of the road in Soweto. It was returned to its proper driver.
Police continued to investigate and traced one suspect – a 54-year-old man, whom they arrested in Soweto. He will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court soon.
