It is not every day that we hear of a gold-plated performance by a member of the police force, so it is only fair that we give credit where it is due.
Detective Helms Simali of Magaliesburg Police Station was on top form when he finalised a 2015 case of business robbery with a deserved sentence for the accused, who appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court on charges of robbing the Magalies Vulstasie (Filling Station).
The robbery took place one evening in March 2015. According to the complainant, who works as a cashier at the filling station, the accused bought some cigarettes and then pulled out and pointed a gun at the complainant. Two accomplices then walked in and forced the cashier to lie down. During the incident, the amount of R6 000 was taken from the till and a tablet belonging to the complainant was also taken. The video footage that was acquired from the garage tied the accused unquestionably to the crime.
“The suspect was linked to the business robbery case after being arrested in Krugersdorp for the possession of an unlicensed firearm. He was sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment,” said the detective.
The acting station commander, Colonel Sizakele Ngobese, congratulated the detective and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on the thorough investigation, which ensured an appropriate sentence.
