Rapist gets seven years
While the victim was being raped, passers-by rescued her, and managed to apprehend both of the perpetrators.
A rapist was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment after being found guilty in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court recently.
The 28-year-old victim was on her way home at 4am on 26 March 2016 when she was attacked by two men. The men assaulted her and one raped her.
While he was raping her, she was rescued by community members who were passing the scene. They managed to apprehend both of the perpetrators.
The victim opened a case of rape against them later that day. Sergeant Thabo Au, a member of the Family Violence, Sexual Offences and Child Protection Unit, was assigned to the case.
Both of the suspects were charged with rape, but one testified against the other as state witness and the second suspect, who had raped the victim, was then convicted.
“It is heart-warming to see that crimes of this nature are concluded positively,” said Brigadier Leon Kruger, acting cluster commander for the West Rand. “Sergeant Au and the NPA are commended on this sentence, which will surely serve as a deterrent to like-minded criminals.”
