Sterkfontein wellness initiative a big success

This is an important initiative that will encourage staff members to pursue a healthy lifestyle and help increase productivity.

Boosting staff morale and promoting a healthy lifestyle in the workplace is exactly what Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital recently did when they hosted their second annual Sports Wellness Day.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a major concern nowadays, therefore the objective of the day was to raise the awareness of staff members and nearby communities to the fact that physical activity plays an important role in the development of overall health. It also minimises the risks of contracting diseases, as well as curbing absenteeism by establishing a strong workforce.

The Wellness Coordinator, Tinswalo Shishaba, said that this is an important initiative that will encourage staff members to pursue a healthy lifestyle and help increase productivity. She further added this is an important day on the health calendar that needs not to be taken lightly.

The winners each received a medal and the winning team was rewarded with a trophy.

Different service providers in the Health Department were invited to showcase health awareness. Participating institutions included the hosts (Sterkfontein Hospital), SOS Private Security, Masakhane, Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital and Tara Hospital, who all competed against each other. Despite the threat posed by tropical cyclone Dineo, the five teams did not stop playing on the pitch, and the day was filled with laughter, food and exciting activities. The employees could either participate in netball or soccer, or attend the fun walk and fun run.

“We want to rejoice and increase their performance with these events,” said the Communication Officer at Sterkfontein, Sibusiso Mafethe.

These events also improve the morale of the employees and motivate them to have a positive impact in other people’s lives. Several organisations attended the event to give employees some advice about their health. These organisations not only provided physical health advice, but financial health advice as well.

“As much as physical wellness is important, financial freedom matters just as much,” debt consultant Lydia Natte said.

The organisers plan to make the day bigger and better in the upcoming year and also to promote health and wellness more in the future.
