Black Eagles to soar higher with much needed funds

Silverstar Casino recently presented the Black Eagle Project with a contribution of R50 000 at the Gardens.

When the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden was originally founded in 1982, black eagles nested in the cliffs next to the Witpoortjie Falls.

The Black Eagle Project is a Section 21 non-profit organisation which monitors the black eagles, which are still resident in the Botanical Garden. The project consists of a seven-member committee and approximately 30 dedicated volunteer members. Over the years this project has proved just how much can be achieved by the voluntary efforts of a passionate team.

Silverstar Casino recently presented the Black Eagle Project with a contribution of R50 000 at the Garden. Since the casino complex was built on solid environmental principles, the Black Eagle Project offered Silverstar invaluable advice during the construction process. To honour its commitment to the environment, Silverstar makes an annual donation to the Black Eagle Project to assist in the preservation of the eagles which naturally inhabit the space surrounding the Silverstar property, in particular the Botanical Garden.

Along with the preservation of the Garden for the black eagles, one of the main objects of the project is to educate the public on the breeding cycle of the black eagle, in order to ensure it is secure for generations to come. The contribution made by Silverstar consists of the coins thrown into the water fountains on the property, and the amount collected at the close of 2016 was a staggering R50 000.

Gerald Draper, chairperson of the Project said, “Funds are always a limiting factor in the running of small conservation projects, and we are so thankful to Silverstar for helping us achieve our objectives. There is a good chance that the eagles will change the location of their nest this year, and we have been worried that we may have to change the position of our web camera to continue to bring our local and international followers quality viewing during future breeding seasons. Silverstar has always shown its concern for the environment, and has been an incredible sponsor over the years. This latest gesture once again demonstrates its commitment to assisting us to conserve and protect the eagles for future generations to enjoy!”

Shane Collinson, Director of Operations and Complex General Manager, said, “Silverstar believes that these eagles should be preserved for future generations to enjoy and admire. These eagles dwell in their natural environment and we should do all we can to preserve them, and the habitat”.

Silverstar has contributed to the project annually since 2008, demonstrating its undoubted commitment to the preservation of the black eagles as well as their home.
