Busy weekend in countryside with various incidents

The South African Air Force was called to scene to assist paramedics.

Last weekend, several accidents were reported in the Kromdraai and Magaliesburg area.

Netcare 911 paramedics were called to the scene of a crash on the R24 at the Maropeng crossing. Reports indicate that a car and a truck collided and one vehicle veered off the road and plunged down an embankment.

On assessment it was found that one person sustained serious injuries, one was in a critical condition and one died.

The critically injured patient was airlifted by the Netcare medical helicopter to a specialised hospital, while the other patient was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Another accident was reported in Magaliesburg at about 11.45am on Sunday morning, 5 March. Netcare 911 paramedics were called to assist Mountain Rescue. The South African Air Force’s 17th Squadron and a team from Off Road Rescue were also called in to help locate and treat a 77-year-old female who had injured herself while hiking in the Magaliesberg mountain region.

Reports from the scene indicate that an elderly woman had slipped and fallen on a hiking trail, in a very inaccessible place, at about 10.30am, sustaining serious injuries. The paramedics stabilised the patient and after she was immobilised in a specialised stretcher, they hoisted her, with the medic and rescuers, into a helicopter.

The patient was then flown to a specialised hospital in Gauteng for the care that she required.
