Herb specialist Margaret Roberts’ public memorial tomorrow

She was one of the first people in South Africa to start organic farming.

The community and country is mourning the death of a legend – Margaret Roberts.

Margaret, known as a herb and plant specialist, was admitted to hospital three weeks ago for a seemingly routine operation. Her condition unfortunately worsened and Margaret tragically passed away at the age of 79 in Pretoria on 4 March.

“Today we say goodbye to a South African legend,” said Kay Montgomery on social media.

With over 50 years’ experience in natural healing and over 40 book titles to her name, she was an inspiration to many and is seen as a national treasure. Margaret began her career as a physiotherapist. As a young farmer’s wife, she began the first mobile clinic to help people who lived on remote farms. She lectured, wrote and experimented with herbs for 50 years. She was one of the first people in South Africa to start organic farming and received a Laureate Award for her work.

Her herbs were included in many product lines with Woolworths bringing herbs to every home in South Africa.

She was in the middle of writing three new books with her daughter, Sandy, and had a number of new projects on the go at their amazing farm, the Margaret Roberts Herbal Centre. Sandy, who has been in business with her mother for 30 years, will continue their work at the Herbal Centre in De Wildt in the North West, so that Margaret’s legacy continues for generations to come.

“I’ve followed her for over 20 years. Such an inspiration. Thank you Margaret. Go well,” said Adrien Coxe on her social media page.

A public memorial service for Margaret will be held at 10am on Saturday, 11 March at the Margaret Roberts Herbal Centre Chapel, in De Wildt.

If you would like to join them please SMS your name and number of guests to 071 161 6441, for catering purposes.

Sandy also said on her Facebook page – “If you would like to bring or send flowers, our Mom loved them”.
