Skateboarders show off at Key West’s park

From teenage skaterboys, to primary school BMX enthusiasts – they all love the small, yet quaint skate park.

There’s not much for children whose parents do not have a lot of money to do in Krugersdorp.

However, Key West Shopping Centre’s Skate Park seems to be a local hotspot for Krugersdorp youngsters.

The community skate park, which is located right behind Key West, has attracted children from all over town since its opening in December 2014.

From teenage skaterboys, to primary school BMX enthusiasts – they all love the small, yet quaint skate park. The bars at the park are perfect for grinding with a skateboard and gave Hanré de Villiers an opportunity to show off his great skills. From 50-50 grinds to 5-0 grinds – Hanré did it all.

Other skateboarders, like Itumeleng Menong and Albert Hlalsi, also showed off their ‘sick’ skills. Itumeleng did a few ollies while casually moving between ramps.

Albert tried a few tail-slides to get the hang of it, and before long he got it just right.

The younger children, each with their own BMX bike, did nose-presses and bunny hops. Tony Longera, a BMX cyclist, tried to perfect his nose-presses by showing off to the camera.

The skate park covers an area of 600 square metres, and entry to the park is free. Children of all ages are welcome to join in the fun.

The park has the following features:

• A multi-level platform allows for unlimited speed, and is encapsulated by a transition from 5ft to 9ft with a long crispy tight China Bank

• It has bowled out corner pockets and escalators off the 9ft extension for that extra whip

• On the street side, there is a flat bar, 60mm granite ledges, a kicker, a euro gap, a manny pad and a spine

The Key West skate park gives aspiring skateboarders the opportunity to skate in a safe environment away from the streets. Skateboarding is a positive movement that teaches young people discipline.
