Filling up each library — one book at a time
"We saw a great opportunity to get involved"
“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world,” said Nelson Mandela, and the best way to get an education is to read a book.
The News recently told its readers that the libraries in Krugersdorp were becoming dilapidated. Trudie Naudé, councillor for Ward 38, put out a challenge for residents to fill the library in Krugersdorp West with books that were taking up too much space in their houses.
UniCollege West Rand saw the plea and immediately asked all their students and staff to bring as many books as possible to the college.
“We saw a great opportunity to get involved,” said marketing manager, Natalie Franklin.
The college decided to clean out its library and collect books from the students. The response they received was overwhelming, and they were able to donate more than 300 books, ranging from Afrikaans fiction to children’s books, and many other categories in between.
Trudie was there for the pick-up and was overwhelmed by the college’s donation.
“I want to thank the college for this donation. This will make a big difference,” she said.
Trudie told the News that most of the libraries in Krugersdorp are almost empty. The poorer community is in need of books, because they do not have access to the internet. She also wants the younger community to get involved and feels that book donations can fill up all the libraries in Krugersdorp.
Despite the 300 books donated by UniCollege, the libraries are still in dire need of more. The community is therefore encouraged to donate all their books that are taking up wanted space. People wanting to make a donation can contact Trudie on 082 657 6211 or deliver the books to any library in Krugersdorp.
Trudie asked the community to please send her pictures of books being donated at the array of libraries throughout Krugersdorp.
