Cellphones and driving – a death sentence waiting to happen
This action will cost you, because a R1 000 fine will be issued if you are caught.
More and more people use their cellphones while driving … let’s face it, we are all guilty of this. But what are the potential consequences?
It is well known that cellphones causes a drop in concentration, which causes unnecessary accidents and incidents such as road rage or even death.
Mogale City Traffic Department’s spokesperson, Papi Motaung, recently informed the News that cellphone usage among motorists is becoming a big problem in and around Krugersdorp.

“Motorists are also trying to police other drivers who are making use of their cellphones while driving,” said Papi.
He added that most accidents are caused by use of a cellphone while driving.
Regulation 308 A Subsection 1A of the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 states, “No person shall drive a vehicle on a public road while holding a cellular or mobile telephone or any other communication device in one or both hands or with any other part of the body”.
An average of about 10 people are caught daily, making use of their cellphones while driving. This action could be costly, because a R1 000 fine will be issued for motorists who are caught disobeying this rule.
Papi also said that every third car you see on the road is driven by someone talking on a cellphone. The department urges motorists to keep their eyes on the road and obey the rules of the road and to rather install a hands-free kit.
“Make no mistake, Mogale City Traffic Department officials are out there to fine you if you break this rule,” said Papi.
