Children should be safe when being transported
Here are some things to look out for when looking for transport for your children.
There is a growing trend in and around Mogale City, with transporters of learners constantly breaking the rules of the road.
These offences include overloading, speeding, not affixing number plates and sometimes drinking while driving. This is extremely worrying as there have been several very bad accidents involving school transporters in recent times, and a number of young people have lost their lives.
Mogale City Traffic Department recently did an investigation and held some interviews with the drivers of these vehicles.
“They told us that there are two factors that cause them to overload their vehicles, and rush to get back for more loads – the low fares they charge, and the late payments they get from the parents of their passengers,” said Papi Motaung, spokesperson for the Department.
Motaung added that the responsibility for protecting the lives of innocent children lies with both the Department and the community, saying “Parents as well as the whole community should be involved in keeping the youth safe.”
The Department also recently launched an education programme aimed at the learners. During the programme, members of the Department visit the schools to give the learners some valuable information and education about road safety.
One of the key points the Department highlighted was that the children should look out for each other.

Tips and points to look out for when looking for transport for your child:
• Check whether the licence disc on the vehicle is valid
• Check if there is an operator card for passengers displayed on the vehicle’s windscreen
• Check whether the driver has a certificate from the Department of Transport
• Check that the driver has a valid driver’s licence and a professional driving permit
• Make sure the vehicle has a fire extinguisher
Parents are urged to do random checks and make sure that the drivers’ documentation is always in good order.
Remember to keep these youngsters safe, as they are our leaders of the future.
