Bank ploughs back into community

"This vegetable garden forms an important part of aiding our current feeding scheme which has come under pressure from rising prices."

In line with Capitec Bank’s continued commitment to giving back to the communities in which it does business, the Krugersdorp branch headed out to Tsakani Primary School to help bring their vegetable garden back to life.

The bank raised R26 300 which was then invested in a garden tunnel to improve the gardening capabilities of the school.

Capitec Bank, headline sponsor of The Color Run™, partnered with Adopt-A-School as part of their Sustainable Education Solutions programme. The Color Run™ was held in Randfontein and the proceeds from the ticket sales (R10 each) were donated to the project on Friday, 19 May.

Not only did the day bring joy to the participants, it also brought new opportunities to the learners at the school. Now 1 346 learners will have the opportunity to eat vegetables such as cauliflower, spinach, and other ingredients used to make a good stew, grown in their own garden. The gardeners will only use organic pest repellents, such as rosemary, a herb with such a strong smell that bugs won’t come close to it. A JoJo tank that stores rain water is used to irrigate the plants through a drip system, as too much water goes to waste if the water is sprayed.

“Our wish is to provide the schools identified in each region with opportunities to enhance their education,” said Sibusiso Kumalo, head of product marketing for Capitec Bank. “What better way than to provide the students of Tsakani Primary with a nutritious, sustainable solution which will improve their productivity and teach them new skills?”

Rethabile Belle represented the Adopt-A-School Foundation. The Foundation has been the bank’s partner in selecting beneficiary schools around the country and identifying the primary needs which Capitec Bank helps to fulfill.

“We are very pleased with the support we get from Capitec Bank,” said David Chauke, principal of the school. “This vegetable garden forms a very important part of aiding our current feeding scheme which has come under pressure from rising prices. All our learners get lunch every day, with the foundation phase children getting breakfast too.

In many cases these are the only meals the learners will receive, so our focus is to make them as nutritious as possible.”
