Little geniuses win bursaries

The pupils, who all won the Omo Fast Kids Challenge want to be astronauts, engineers and successful business men/ women.

With wide-eyed wonder, 20 primary school learners sat in front of a man whom they were so excited to meet, listening to him talking about his remarkable journey into space.

Mandla Maseko is a qualified astronaut who was the first black man in space.

Some of the learners interrupted his speech by saying that they wanted to be just like him. Mandla encouraged them, saying that because they are so good at maths, the have the potential to become whatever they wanted. The confident learners were all winners of the Omo Fast Kids Challenge, an app used to increase children’s mathematical skills. These learners were all honoured at an awards ceremony at Magalies River Lodge on Friday, 19 May. The winners were treated to an educational weekend at the lodge where they got to meet Mandla, as well as Siphokazi Mdlankomo, a celebrity chef and show host, Michael Stopforth, an animator, illustrator and lecturer, and Tonderai Chavhanga, a Springbok rugby player.

Omo recently had a competition with the app where learners could compete against each other to win one of 20 bursaries to the value of R10 000.

Prince Botha, one of the winners of the Omo Fast Kids Challenge who won a bursary worth R10 000.

They had to answer 10 maths questions on the app within 15 minutes.

The game as a whole uses a reward system that helps encourage frequent engagement and offers a fun, interactive way for learners to explore the world of maths. The online game, which is still accessible to learners, aims to help our country’s children increase their marks by developing their mathematics skills through varying levels of maths drills.

Parents and teachers can also join in the maths adventure and monitor the learners’ progress through a registration process.
