[Breaking] Truck – 1, Car – 0

The truck sustained little damage, but the car was a write off – its roof was peeled right off.

Three people sustained injuries, one being left in a critical condition, when a car and a truck collided on Albertina Sisulu Road (Main Reef Road) near the intersection of Station Street, Luipaardsvlei at about noon today, 25 May.

ER24 paramedics worked alongside Gauteng Regional medical services and West Rand District Municipality’s (WRDM) Fire and Rescue personnel using the Jaws of Life to free one of the patients, who was trapped inside the wrecked car.

The two occupants – driver and passenger – of the car were stabilised and transported to nearby hospitals. Krugersdorp Traffic Department and Help24 were also on scene to regulate traffic. The driver of the truck sustained only minor injuries.

A section of the road was closed and traffic was diverted onto the side of the road to keep the vehicles moving.

The car’s roof was peeled off when it collided with a truck.

The cause of the collision is still subject to police investigation, however eyewitnesses claimed that the driver of the car tried to overtake a truck in front of him and realised he wasn’t going to make it. He swerved back onto his lane and lost control of the car which in turn moved back to the oncoming traffic lane and collided with an oncoming truck. This wasn’t confirmed by police.

The truck sustained very little damage, but the car was a write-off. Its roof was peeled back and the bonnet was nowhere to be seen. Pieces of the car, among them a door, the front bumper and the windscreen littered the road.

A WRDM Fireman sprayed water onto the tar to remove oil spilled by the car during the collision.

Emergency services personnel worked fast to remove the car, shards of glass and oil from the road. WRDM firefighters used one of the pressure hoses to wash oil off the surface of the tar.

The scene was cleared within an hour.
