Foreigners shot in mob justice incident
A riot ensued after the suspects were assaulted. Police told the residents not to take the law into their own hands.
Krugersdorp Police are investigating one case of murder and another of attempted murder after residents of the Makhulagama informal settlement near West Village assaulted two men they thought had murdered one of their friends.
On Thursday, 25 May, two residents of Makhulugama were making their way home from nearby shops. Two men allegedly attacked and shot them.
The suspects fled the scene on foot. Police and emergency services were contacted. When the police arrived, they found one victim had already died, while the other was badly injured. The injured man was taken to hospital.

On Friday, 26 May at about 11.30am, residents of the informal settlement took matters into their own hands by apprehending the two people they thought had shot their friends.
They severely assaulted the two men and then contacted the police. The men, who had sustained severe head injuries, were taken to hospital.
The police urged community members not to take the law into their own hands. Instead, they were encouraged to call the police immediately, so that a proper investigation could be done and the relevant stakeholders could be summoned to the scene of the crime without any disturbance or interference from the community.
The residents of the informal settlement rioted after police told them that it is illegal to take the law into their own hands.
