Gangsterism in local primary schools a worry for parents
Police searched the primary school learners and found dangerous weapons, drugs, and alcohol in their possession.
Police identified three groups of young gangsters in a local primary school when they received a complaint of gangsterism. The police proceeded to the school on Wednesday, 24 May and noticed the school had a serious problem with the behaviour of pupils believed to be about 14 years old.
Police officials conducted a search of the pupils and found a pair of scissors and a hammer in their possession. Their parents were informed about the discoveries and behaviour.

Police also conducted unannounced visits to other schools in Kagiso on Friday, 26 May to ensure the safety of other primary school learners.

During their searches, police arrested three learners for possession of a pill (suspected to be Mandrax), dagga and a bottle of alcohol respectively. Police also noted that whenever they conducted searches in a class, learners were found to be in possession of cellphones. The cellphones were confiscated and handed over to the school management to take a decision.
“Every Friday we experience problems with learners fighting with outsiders,” said a teacher at one of the schools.
“There are instances where some have ended up in hospital with serious injuries as the result of stabbing. We will therefore continue to conduct such unannounced visits to try and stabilise and save the lives of both learners and teachers.
Police urged parents to assist them in ensuring their children are not involved in criminal activities by constantly checking their school bags.
