Soldiers forgotten to suffer in silence

The organisation does not receive any subsidies of any sort for the cottages.

“As soon as there is peace, soldiers are forgotten,” said Manie du Preez.

The Memorable Order of Tin Hats (M.O.T.Hs) was founded in 1927 by Charles Evenden to be a brotherhood of South African former front-line soldiers. The idea behind the organisation is to help fellow comrades in need, either financially or physically and to remember all servicemen and women who have answered the Sunset Call, in both war and peace time. More than 4 000 people are being accommodated in these cottages throughout South Africa, but sometimes they feel forgotten.

M.O.T.H Warrior Oasis Cottages is hosting its ninth annual golf day on 22 June at Glenvista Country Club, Johannesburg to raise funds for the cottages. One of the organisation’s aims is to raise funds for these ex-servicemen and -women who generally only receive a monthly government pension of R1 600. As the cottages are more than 50 years old, the maintenance is an ongoing worry. One of the major concerns are the roofs that need immediate attention after the heavy rains experienced over the past few months.

The organisation does not receive any subsidies of any sort for the cottages. Their income is generated from the resident’s levies and from the generous hands and hearts of the public.

The organisation would like to invite everyone to participate in the golf day, or make a donation if possible. To make a booking, contact Andy Boden via ajboden@fnb.co.za or call him on 083 701 3495.
