Overloader heading to Malawi arrested
The officers alleged that the load was as high as a single storey house.
Mogale City Traffic Officers arrested a 45-year-old man on Sunday, 25 May after his vehicle was loaded so high that they initially thought it was a truck transporting steel containers. The officers were traveling near Tudor Shaft at about 7.20pm when they spotted a suspicious-looking vehicle driving without headlights on, in the direction of Luipaardsvlei.
The police made a U-turn and stopped the vehicle. The officers alleged that the height of the load matched that of a single storey house. When they pulled the vehicle over, the suspect quickly alighted and came running to the officers.
He gave the officers a temporary driver’s licence that didn’t even match his name. He also gave a passport to the officers that wasn’t even his. The driver told the officers that he was on his way to Malawi and his two brothers were travelling with him.
He denied suggestions that there were other persons in the vehicle, besides his brothers. But, two other persons suddenly emerged from the back of the vehicle. They couldn’t explain their presence and the officers arrested all of them. A case of fraud and defeating the ends of justice was opened against all five of them and they were detained at Kagiso Police Station.
They are due to appear in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court Soon.
