Sea Cadets learn to fly – but still want to sail
The day was enjoyed by all but in no way changed the cadets' ideas of where they want to be one day.
The Sea Cadets from Training Ship (TS) Rook in Krugersdorp recently attended the airshow at the SA Air Force Museum at Airforce Base Swartkops.
The airshow took place at the beginning of May.
Everywhere they turned there was a history lesson to experience; be it a group of men in various World War II uniforms explaining each country’s uniform and the role that country played in the war, or an “Ops” room with radio, Morse code and radar equipment, and of course there were planes in all shapes and sizes. Most enthralling were the many flying displays.
The day was enjoyed by all but in no way changed the cadets’ ideas of where they want to be one day.
Able seaman Pieter Janse van Vuuren, who is interested in studying engineering when he leaves school, said “It was very interesting, but I still want to go the the navy and work on a ship”. Seaman Burger Bredenhann said that the navy is better.

The South Africa Sea Cadets is a non-profit organisation with dedicated instructors giving up their free time to train and prepare youngsters for a nautical career. Officers are not remunerated for their time.
Cadets have ‘serious fun’ while learning leadership skills, self-discipline and maritime-orientated skills as a voluntary extra-mural activity. Any youngster, irrespective of race, gender or religion, is welcome.
Training takes place on Saturday afternoons from 12.30pm to 4pm, with leadership camps held during selected weekends.
The base is located at the Gereformeerde Kerk, King George Street, Krugersdorp.
