Two pups rescued from dustbin
After being rescued from a cruel death, Barney and Fred now need a loving and caring home.
When you think about puppies, your heart probably melts like chocolate, and smiles appear out of nowhere.
However, this was not the case on Sunday, 4 June, when The 9th Day Animal Shelter – a rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing centre – received a concerning call from a member of the public regarding suspicious activity in a field nearby.

“What we discovered would make grown men cry. Two absolutely stunning cross-breed pups, tied together with something that looked like pieces of towels, shoved into a black dustbin bag, and discarded like rubbish,” said Charmaine Booysens, the founder of the shelter.
According to Charmaine, the pieces of cloth wrapped tighter and tighter around the puppies’ necks, legs and tummies with each movement.

In an attempt to find a family for the abandoned pups, she posted the following on the shelter’s Facebook page:
“They’re about six months old, with the sweetest nature. We are bursting at the seams and don’t have space in our kennels. Please is there anyone that’s willing to adopt these angels, anyone willing to show them that they aren’t ‘rubbish’, because they’re unwanted pavement specials?” she wrote.
She also included that they don’t have to be homed together, even though it would be beneficial for them to stay together after what they’ve been through.
“If they got dumped this way, imagine the life they’ve had. We’ve named them Barney and Fred (like the Flintstones),” Charmaine concluded.
If you are willing to give Barney and/ or Fred a second chance, and restore their hopes, feel free to contact Charmaine on 082 924 9337.
