Passenger hides unlicensed gun in his shoe

The driver of the vehicle did not know his passenger was carrying a gun.

The Hekpoort Police arrested a 49-year-old man on Friday, 14 July for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The police were conducting a stop-and-search operation on the R24 near New Thorndale Road at 9am when they stopped a VW Polo with four occupants.

The driver said he did not know the occupants and had only agreed to transport them.

Constable September of the Hekpoort Police searched the vehicle and found a firearm in one of the men’s shoes. When they questioned him, he was unable to present a licence for the firearm; consequently, he was arrested.

The suspect was transported to the police station and will appear in court soon.

“We need more officers like Constable September who are commended for their commitment to fighting crime,” said Captain Zwane, station commander for the Hekpoort Police.
