Safety risk at business’ front door
According to shop owner, the manhole lid and streetlight cap were stolen one weekend approximately three weeks ago.
Recently a concerned local business owner contacted the News regarding an exposed manhole and some exposed street light cables that could potentially be very dangerous.
This fridge repair shop is located in one of Krugersdorp’s busiest streets – Commissioner Street. Needless to say, there are a lot of feet tramping these pavements every day.
According to shop owner, Fred Botes, the manhole lid and streetlight cap were stolen during a weekend approximately three weeks ago.
“When I left the shop that Saturday, everything was fine, but when I returned on Monday, I discovered that these things were missing,” he said.
Fred then called the municipality, which allegedly investigated the matter, but left without offering a solution.
“When they didn’t come back, I tried phoning again on numerous occasions, but I can’t seem to get through to the relevant people. I even tried blocking the manhole with a piece of wood, but that got stolen as well,” he explained.
His main concerns include someone injuring themselves should they not see the manhole and step into it or little children getting shocked by the wires from the exposed street light.
“A lot of people walk past here and a lot of children stop and fiddle with the exposed wires. It’s a safety risk for each and every pedestrian,” Fred concluded.
