Spike in crime calls for security summit

"We made it our mission to improve the living and business conditions of the local community."

After noticing a substantial spike in crime in Krugersdorp, the Mogale City Crime Forum (MCCF), with the support of other local businesses in the area, including Silverstar Casino, have united to support the ongoing fight against crime.

“After noticing the deteriorating safety conditions in the inner city of Krugersdorp, we have made it our mission to improve the living and business conditions of the local community,” said Gert Jonker, chairperson of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Krugersdorp.

CPF CCTV surveillance systems were successfully implemented at four crime hotspots in the city centre whereafter the MCCF embarked on a Safety and Security Summit to ensure that Mogale City becomes a safe town for all her residents to live and work in.

The gathering was held at Silverstar Casino and addressed concerns in the region. The summit was open to members of the public, as well as Krugersdorp’s business community. Approximately 450 delegates actively participated in the summit and renewed their commitment to make Mogale City a safe town.

“The MCCF shines as a beacon of hope in a community dealing with the repercussions of crime that has taken hold in the area.” said Jonker.

Advocate Engela van Der Merwe, senior prosecutor at the National Prosecuting Authority.

“In partnership with the CPF, initiatives which include achieving more effective crime control, reducing fears of crime, improving quality of life, and improving police service and legitimacy, the MCCF will fight back to make our town safe for all her residents. We believe that the Safety and Security Summit acted as a catalyst to encourage more people to participate in the fight against crime.”

Important speakers such as Brigadier Leon Kruger, deputy cluster Commander for the West Rand; Advocate Engela van der Merwe, senior prosecutor at the National Prosecuting Authority; and Dr Johan Burger from the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) attended the summit.

The CPF is a collaboration partner of the MCCF, together with the West Rand Chamber of Business and Tourism and the Mogale City Municipality.
