Santaco: Taxi fares to go up

Users of taxis will have to prepare for increased fares.

The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) has announced that taxi fares will increase, following the 67-cent petrol price-hike on Wednesday, 6 September.

The organisation warned taxi passengers that fares will increase by between R1 and R5 per single trip, depending on the destination of the passenger.

The spokesperson for Santaco, Thabisho Molelekwa, said the taxi industry will try by all means to keep the price as low as possible and the hike will not exceed R5.

“It is common knowledge that our economy is weak, which puts pressure on taxi owners. Taxi bosses have to deal with fuel price increases, taxi services, maintenance, installments and on top of that ensure that passengers pay fares that are affordable to normal citizens of different economic classes, including the poverty-stricken,” said Molelekwa.

The spokesperson said Santaco is pleased it managed to get through the hard times of the technical recession, and hopes to continue putting its passengers first.
