Family and community said goodbye to mother, granny and former mayoress for the last time

At the age of 71, Alex passed away peacefully and was laid to rest next to her beloved husband, former councillor and mayor, Roy Martin.

Approximately one month ago, on 21 August, a great many friends and loved ones were deeply saddened by the passing of former mayoress, Alexandria Victoria Martin.

She passed away peacefully at the age of 71, and was laid to rest next to her beloved husband, former councillor and mayor, Roy Martin.

Alex, as she was known fondly by many, was born in Pretoria, the youngest of six children. Alex and Roy moved to Krugersdorp in the late 70s where they settled with their family and started their first, and later their second business together.

Their council careers reached their peak during the 80s when they were elected as Mayor and Mayoress for a term, and as Deputy Mayor and Mayoress for two more terms.

According to her son, Darryl, Alex was very involved in municipal elections as well as numerous charities and community projects, but her family remained at the top of her list.

“Family and friends were of utmost importance to her, especially her grandchildren. She was loving, caring and giving and she simply loved to entertain,” her daughter Lara explained.

Her favourite activities included cooking, baking and knitting.

“She always invited people over to cook for them. She was a real lady,” she said.

She is survived by her daughter, two sons, a son-in-law, two daughters-in-law and seven (soon to be eight) grandchildren.

“Our mom was a respected lady with impeccable ethics, values and morals. We love you Mom, until we meet again,” her eldest son, Grant said.

Her family would like to thank everyone for their support during this difficult time, including Chief Superintendent Bryan Murray, who went out of his way to ensure she left the world with deserving respect.
