You may pay even more for electricity next year
Though Krugersdorp's power supply is from Mogale City, if the proposed hike by Eskom is granted, Krugersdorpers could pay more.
Although Mogale City residents had to pay more for their electricity bill at the beginning of the 2017/18 financial year, they might have to pay even more in 2018.
This comes after the electrical mother of the local municipality, Eskom, applied for a 19,9 per cent increase.
The proposed 28 per cent hike is an effort to raise nearly R220 billion in allowance revenue. It is now up to the National Energy Regulator (Nersa) to decide whether it approves the increase proposal. In June this year, Nersa agreed to a tariff increase of about 2,2 per cent for the current financial year, making it inevitable that residents would pay more for their electricity.
Krugersdorp resident, Steven Khomo, said the increase in the electricity tariff earlier this year is high enough for this financial year.
“The municipality should come up with a strategy to prevent this hike – Eskom cannot expect to raise R219 500 billion while the country is still struggling economically,” said Steven.
The Mogale City Local Municipality did not respond when questioned on the matter.
