Matrics: Make 2018 your money-making gap year

A gap year does not have to cost you or your parents; plan your year ahead now.

Grade 12 learners are currently writing their preliminary examinations and soon they will kiss their high school careers goodbye and reality will kick in.

If you are in Grade 12 and have not registered with any tertiary institution and cannot decide exactly what’s on the cards for next year, then consider making your gap or sabbatical year a productive one.

The thought of being a grown-up, fresh out of school, and taking serious decisions can be daunting. The most important year of your life will be behind you and there is never enough time to decide or do all the things you like. The worst is definitely not seeing yourself moving towards your vision for your future.

Financial Management student, Treasure Morr filled his gap year two years ago with a soccer competition that he participated in and enjoyed since he was doing what he loves.

“Although I wasn’t paid in the tournament, I made friends, improved on my interpersonal skills and got to experience what being a full-time soccer player felt,” said 20-year-old Treasure.

Another way you can fill your gap year is by volunteering. Whether you love animals, children, the elderly or the environment, there is a good cause in or around your area. You can even offer or apply to shadow at the company you would like to work for in future.

Get a job, any legitimate job. Not everyone gets the job of their dreams as a first job, but eventually they do. At this point in your life a job is for experience. You probably have little or no experience being fresh out of high school, but you have to have at least one reference on your CV.

Another important factor is getting your driver’s licence. This task can be challenging, cost money and is time-consuming – so the sooner you get it done, the better for you as almost all careers and businesses require a driver’s licence.

As Head of Strategic business development, Stephen Buys said, take time to plan or research gap year programmes where you will get to travel, as many young people would like to travel during a gap year, and explore different places but at the same time get paid or provided with food or accommodation.
