NSPCA rescuers risk their own lives to save trapped doggy

The rock climbers found the frightened dog, stayed with him, talked to him and slowly gained his trust while an NSPCA inspector made her way up the cliff towards him.

A brave rescue team of the NSPCA rescued a dog trapped in the treacherous rocky cliffs of Kings Kloof, Oaktree on Saturday, 30 September.

Nadia Hansa, an inspector at the NSPCA saved the Ridgeback-cross and brought him to safety after members of the Mountain Club of South Africa discovered him while on a training climb.

Nick Reynolds, one of the rock climbers, found him, and together with Nicky Knox and Deanne Kieser, stayed with him until help arrived. He was distressed and dehydrated.

According to a post on the NSPCA Facebook page, the dog has been nicknamed ‘Craggy’ and was brought back to safety by the inspector.

The climbers stayed with him and talked to the frightened animal and slowly gained his trust while Hansa made her way up to him.

The post read: “Hansa then tranquilised Craggy so that she and the rescue team could safely bring him down the cliff face. The rescuers and their precious cargo arrived safely at the bottom and were greeted by relieved and happy team mates and escorted back to waiting vehicles. ”

Craggy was taken to a local veterinarian for some medical attention and is recovering well.

The post also thanked the club and the members who stayed with the dog, who was facing certain death.

“Sincere appreciation also goes to Johno who climbed the rock face with Inspector Hansa, harnessed Craggy and brought him down from where he was trapped on the ledge.”

Since the save hundreds of people have commented on the Facebook post, calling the inspector and the climbers “heroes” and thanking them for their efforts.
