Bikes, beer and tattooed beauties

The local line-up also included DJ Fresh, Timo ODV, Euphonik, and more.

BMW Motorrad used the German festival – Pure and Crafted – which is hosted in Berlin each year, as inspiration for the design of the local Pure and Crafted South African festival that took place on Saturday, 30 September in Muldersdrift. The festival showcased some of the best vintage and heritage motorcycles in the country.

Wymoth Palmer-Pilgram, chairman of West Rand BMW and vintage motorcycle fanatic, was one of the exhibitors.

“Motorcycling has been my passion,” said Wymoth. “And my first motorcycle was a BMW. The brand just stuck because I’ve never had to replace an engine on one in my entire life.”

He exhibited 13 of his vintage BMWs and said that all of them still run smoothly.

“We went to Cape Town on the back of these three,” he said while pointing to a collection of red BMWs.

And it’s not just he who showed a great interest in all things two-wheeled. His one-and-a-half-year-old grandson, Warrick reached out with both hands, hinting that he should be picked up and put on a bike.

Warrick already has a teeny-weeny motorcycle at home, but he shows a great love for the big boys too. Together with Warrick’s father JP, he and Wymoth represent three generations of motorcycling.

In the background however, the festival’s great lineup entertained the tattooed generation. Lost Frequencies, fresh from hosting a show at Tomorrowland, performed in Joburg for the first time ever on the Pure and Crafted stage.

The local line-up also included DJ Fresh, Timo ODV, Euphonik, Dean Fuel, Kyle Worde, Chunda Munki, Matthew Mole, Bye Beneco, The Rocketeers, Bianca Blanc and Ricky H.

The festival was a feast of authenticity, artisanal craft, bespoke design and custom expression from some of SA’s coolest homegrown brands.
