Local shopaholics shop ’til they drop online

You can shop online conveniently if you stick to the tried and trusted.

Customers now have fulfillment of selecting from the massive variety of brands that cater to their every need at their fingertips.

Howard Saunders, a retail futurist, recently appeared at the 21st Annual Congress of the South African Council of Shopping Centres, where he spoke on the topic ‘The future is scary’, painting a picture of what the future would look like with the emergence of robotics, artificial intelligence, driverless cars and facial recognition software.

Online shopping has taken over in the retail sphere, with 80 per cent of consumers the News spoke to in different locations, preferring to shop online instead of going to a shopping complex. It is no wonder then that conventional shops are no longer making as many sales as in the past.

Here are the comments of five of the consumers that we spoke to about online shopping:

• Kyla van Heerden, 25, from Roodepoort said she always shops online. She said the prices are good if you look for specials and buy from reputable online stores. She usually shops for things that can no longer be found in the stores, like old CDs and DVDs.

“The delivery takes few days or maximum two weeks, it depends – the faster you want your delivery, the more you pay. My friends also buy online,” said Kyla.

• Melanie Nukeri, of Witpoortjie, said she tried online shopping from overseas sites, but was not happy with the goods when they were delivered. She now only uses South African sites for online shopping.

“The quality of the dress was poor, the site I had ordered from is in Dubai, the dress looked genuine on the site, but was disastrous when I saw it and held it in my hands, I never even wore the dress and I won’t be shopping online from offshore sites again. I now shop online from local sites only” said Melanie.

• Grade 9 cricketer, Mickey Biles from Mindalore, said he has been doing online shopping for a while now and he is impressed by the experience so far.

“Online shopping is good, everything worked out on the internet: payment, shipment, delivery, costs, everything. Recently I bought some cricket equipment. I buy sports equipment from abroad because their quality is better and a lot cheaper. The delivery from England took five days and it was a creditable brand,” said the 15-year-old.

• Jabu Makhoba, of Krugersdorp admitted that he is skeptical of online stores, and he does not see himself shopping this way in future.
