Key West Shopping Centre shoppers were welcomed by a breathtaking display of cupcakes baked with love and donated by Cupcake of Hope’s Cupcake Angels. These ‘angels’ are members of the public who bake for good causes.
This event on Saturday, 30 September, was Cupcake of Hope’s biggest event of the year – National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer.
For their R10 donation per cupcake the public also received a leaflet depicting the early warning signs of childhood cancer as it’s of the utmost importance to create awareness.

They also offered face painting, a ‘decorate your own cupcake’ opportunity and a few lucky draws.
The courageous cancer warrior is little Maia Gordon who will be turning three later this month. In 2014 Maya was born with a sacrococcygeal teratoma – a cancerous growth on her coccyx. It was surgically removed when she was a mere two days old. After some wound care and other premature issues she was finally able to go home.
However, when Maia was eight months old, the oncologist noticed elevated cancer markers and by the time she was nine months old, there was an exponential raise in her cancer markers. She could no longer pass urine due to a new tumour pressing on her bladder.
She needed another surgery to remove this tumour, but surgeon found that it had already attached itself to most of her organs. While removing it, it disintegrated, leaving millions of cancer cells behind. Maia underwent six rounds of chemotherapy, each with its own complications.
“We are so happy that Maia has been cancer- and chemo-free for almost two years; not to mention that she is the cutest little girl,” said Bianca van Vuuren, coordinator of the event.
She went on to say that the mall was very busy and the support overwhelming. They sold almost all the cupcakes their Cupcake Angels donated.
“We had a very good year and even though our final figures are not in yet, we hope to break the R2 million mark this year. I am privileged to be a part of an organisation that truly goes the extra mile for these children,” she concluded.
