Residents experience ‘water leak from hell’

For the past ten months Magda has been reporting a recurring water leak on her sidewalk to the municipality. It seems though that the repairs made are only temporary.

For the past 10 months, Magda has been reporting a recurring water leak on her sidewalk to the municipality, but discovers each time that the repairs done may only have been temporary.

Magda Badenhorst and Kassidy Lombard have been experiencing what they describe as a ‘water leak from hell’ since the beginning of this year.

“The house’s foundation is my biggest fear at the moment. If this is going on on our sidewalk, who knows what’s happening beneath our house and driveway. It could be weakening the foundation, leading to a possible sinkhole,” she said.

She explained that since her water meter started leaking and water began flowing down the street in January, she contacted the municipality immediately, and again in February, but to no avail.

The fault was only partially repaired when the meter itself broke, preventing anyone from reading it. According to her, municipal workers replaced the water meter in March.

Roughly one month later, the meter started leaking again. Since then, she has tried to get hold of the municipality for six consecutive months.

“I really devoted one or two days to the issue each month, in hopes of getting hold of someone to help us. It was really difficult to get through to someone,” she explained. She also mentioned that she has been in contact with her ward councilor, Jade Miller, who has also been reporting the problem to the relevant authorities. It was only last week, on Wednesday, 11 October, that some municipal workers came out to fix the leak – after Kassidy posted a concerned letter with a photo on Facebook.

“It took ten months and a Facebook post to get someone to help us. Yes, I am grateful that they came to fix the leak, but why did it have to take so long?” Magda said.

When the News visited the household the following day, Magda said that even though the leak was fixed the previous day, water had already started leaking through again.”It’s quite ridiculous. There are so many people who don’t have water in other parts of the country, and Mogale City is just wasting it,” she said.Magda and Kassidy hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel and will continue to report this problem to the relevant department.
