On-fleek robbers strike again?

Two robberies with overwhelming similarities compared. Both times, they stole only perfume.

Could it be that there is a gang of robbers who specifically steal perfume?

This is the question the News had to ask after it was reported that a mere two weeks after a number of suspects stole perfumes from Clicks in Key West, a group of men also stole perfume from Truworths in River Square Centre in Three Rivers.

The Vaalweekblad reported that on Tuesday, 10 October at about 5.45am, three vehicles stopped at the centre and broke into Truworths. The two of the vehicles were Audi A3s – one black and one navy-blue – and the third vehicle was white (make unknown at this stage).

They stole perfumes allegedly worth R500 000. They also held a security guard and a contract worker, who was doing upgrades on the centre that morning, as hostages while stuffing two bags full of perfume.

They then fled the scene.

This case shares many similarities with the Clicks, Key West robbery of Thursday, 28 September, as follows:

• The News reported that the suspects in the Clicks robbery also used three vehicles as getaway cars. They also stole nothing but perfume from the store.

• As in the Vaal case, the Key West robbers held patrons in the store hostage.

• Both robberies took place in the early morning, before stores were open for business – the Clicks robbery occurred at 6am, while the Truworths break-in took place 5.45am.

• There were 11 suspects involved in the Clicks robbery – Truworths was robbed by a group of 10 .

• The thieves stuffed the perfumes into two large bags in both robberies.

• Both group of robbers were carrying firearms.

• Both Clicks and Truworths are located near entrances to the malls.

Sergeant Tshepiso Mashele, spokesperson for the Krugersdorp Police said that the police can’t confirm that the cases are linked before intense investigation. Captain Fikile Funda, spokesperson for the Vereeniging Police agreed with her statement and said he would look into the matter. Meanwhile, the police are probably looking for the best smelling robbers on the West Rand.
