A convicted rapist in council
"Evidence has come to light which indicates that one of their sitting councillors in Mogale City is a convicted rapist."
The decision by the EFF to expel six of its councillors in Mogale City is not unexpected in light of the serious allegations against them. Besides defying their leadership, who instructed them not to attend the budget meeting and not to support the budget, the national spokesperson of the EFF said at the time that they had evidence that some of the councillors had been bribed by the ANC.
This was certainly not the first time that allegations were made about attempts at bribery. Soon after the election in August 2016, a number of opposition councillors reported that they had been offered incentives to vote for an ANC mayor in the hung council.”When one takes into account that people in the ANC openly talk about money changing hands during internal ANC political contestation for positions, the question must be asked whether it is the organisation that is rotten to the core, or whether it is just a few ‘bad apples’ who resort to criminal and immoral activities to manipulate the democratic process,” said Alan Fuchs, DA Constituency Head of Mogale City. “The ANC has a lot to answer for.”

In addition, other councillors have been charged with and found guilty of assault, shoplifting, culpable homicide and soliciting for the purposes of prostitution.
“One would have thought that an organisation like the ANC would have wanted their public representatives to be beyond reproach. The fact that they have allowed convicted criminals to represent them, calls into question their public undertakings that they will not tolerate corruption and criminality.”
“Surely it is not reasonable to expect the residents of Mogale City to look up to public representatives who have dubious characters and criminal records? We will ask the MEC for COGTA in the Legislature whether probity checks were done when the ANC chose people to represent them, or whether the appointment of these councillors is in some way a condonation of their behaviour by the organisation.”
