In light of the mayoral-mansion issue involving Dennis Thabe living there without paying, Freedom Front (VF) Plus councillor Amanda de Lange recently voiced the VF’s concern.
According to De Lange the losses incurred by and damage to the Hekpoort mansion are the result of the ANC’s irregular expenditure and lack of accountable governance.

She confirmed that the issue of Dennis Thabe living in the mayoral house without paying was brought to council a number of times in the past. However, she added that the ANC continuously swept it under the carpet.
“Both the ex-mayor, Calvin Seerane and the previous municipal manager, Dan Mashitisho, were aware that Thabe was living in the house as they had given their consent,” she explained.
She said the damage and losses incurred on the property follow a trail of possible wasteful mismanagement by the ANC. The same applies to other facilities such as the Bob van Reenen Stadium and the Krugersdorp Game Reserve which used to generate a considerable income for the Mogale City Local Municipality.
De Lange said that Seerane, Mashitisho and Thabe should be legally prosecuted on the grounds of misconduct, irregular and wasteful expenditure and dishonesty.
“They were well aware of the fact that their behaviour was unlawful. It took the coalition governance to force Thabe out of the house he was squatting in,” she said.

This matter was also brought to the attention of the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Paul Mashatile, who has been privy to the information for some time, yet Province did not demand any accountability, said De Lange.
“Mogale City has been the gravy train for the ANC for years and they will not stop until the town is paralysed by debt and mismanagement,” she concluded.
