Remember National Children’s Day on 4 November
National Chidren's Day is a day to show your appreciation for your children, as well as to teach them about abuse.
Children’s rights are clearly stated in the South African Constitution and by now many citizens know the importance of protecting children from harm.
The South African government has declared the first Saturday of November as National Children’s Day, in a bid to realise and promote children’s rights.
Renette Steyn, from Krugersdorp Child Welfare – an organisation whose vision is to care for and protect children while ensuring development and welfare – said they had not planned anything for National Children’s Day as yet.
“We haven’t prepared anything for Children’s Day – our main focus is Child Protection Week, as we’re a child welfare organisation,” said Renette.
Nana Mthuli from Boltonia said it is disappointing that children are still being abused, despite the programmes and initiatives that have taken place on child abuse, and the number of arrests that have been made.
“The government has done enough. It is up to us, the community members, to act against abuse, and I am going to make sure my four-year-old child knows the Child-line number (08000 55 555),” said Nana.
The News also spoke to several youngsters between the ages of four and eight to get an idea of what parents can get or do for their children on their special day. Michaela, 5, from Krugersdorp’s CBD, said she wants a cellphone or a tablet.
“I like to play games on the phone and tablet,” said Michaela. Sizwe, 4, wants to his mother to take him to his favourite franchise outlet. “I don’t like it when mum goes shopping and leaves me behind. I like the things she buys for me like Happy Meals.”
Jandre, 5, from Krugersdorp West, would like to visit his grandmother. “I miss her,” said Jandre. Natasha, 8, wants to watch any animated movie. “I like to watch movies with my baby sister,” said Natasha.
Mary, 6, also wants a cellphone. “The applications and games are nice to play and my friends have phones,” Mary explained.
The majority of Generation Z are clearly technologically minded and hoping to receive technological gadgets.
