The fit and the fabulous crowned for fundraising cause

With some lipstick here and some hairspray there – do not forget a few soccer balls in the air – this is how a local underprivileged pre-school celebrated their annual fun day fundraising event which was held on Saturday, 4 November.

Mohau Pre-School and Day Care Centre, situated in the Video Centre informal settlement in Muldersdrift, currently caters for roughly 80 children between the age of six months and six years (Grade R).

According to secretary, Charis Steed, they try to host a fundraiser every year in an effort to maintain the buildings, which are all Wendy-house structures. This year they thought it best to host both a Miss Mohau Beauty Pageant and a soccer tournament.

Even though they were unable to raise any funds due to various external factors, the community still had a ball of a time at the local Multi-Purpose Community Centre when they witnessed their little ones showcasing their talents.

“The Miss Mohau Beauty Pageant went off extremely well and was supported by a great many parents and friends. A total of 17 teenage girls took part and were schooled by our administrator and other women from the community who helped with hair styling and make up,” Charis said.

Their small team consists of a principal, Pretty Vilakazi, four teachers, two baby minders, an administrator, a cook, a gardener and a voluntary secretary.

According to Charis, this pre-school is one of the very few schools in the area to offer basic Early Childhood Development education. Since its establishment approximately eight years ago (with some help from Honeydew Merlin Rotary Club) it has expanded from three classrooms to five, and an office.

“We have no electricity and only own a portion of the ground (which used to be Pretty’s home) – the rest of the ground was reclaimed from an old rubbish dump.” she said.

Despite this school’s poor background, they still managed to make the best of their fun day.

The winners of the day are as follows:

Pageant winners:

• Beauty Queen – Kealeboga Molokomme

• First Princess – Ronel Mongale

• Second Princess – Chantel Mphofo

Soccer tournament winners:

• Junior team – Smart Boys

• Senior team – Chakalaka

Chakalaka, who played against three teams from Avianto, Kealeboga and Molokomme, subsequently received a trophy and a soccer kit for the team.

Pretty would like to thank each and every person who contributed to the day, including each community member who joined in the fun.
