Sammy Magalefa gives a hand to needy learners
The member of the Ratanang Football Masters, said he decided to start the school donation project after seeing some learners walking long distances to school barefoot.
The days of going to school barefoot will soon be a thing of the past as a former professional soccer player has donated a number of pairs of school shoes to needy learners.
Sammy Job Magalefa, former Jomo Cosmos defender and midfielder, donated 35 pairs of school shoes to the learners at the Kwaggafontein Farm School in Tarlton. The learners, some of whom were barefoot, smiled from ear to ear after receiving their shoes. A number of Ward 30 committee members were also in attendance at the handover.

Sammy, who is now a member of the keep-fit soccer club Ratanang Football Masters, said he decided to start the school donation project after seeing some learners walking long distances to school barefoot.
He, together with his wife Nonkululeko, and Miss Eagle SA Botlhale Nyaku, approached friends and colleagues to donate a pair of shoes towards the project. The project is now in its third year.
“I’m a resident of Kagiso and it troubles me to see learners travelling to school without shoes, especially during winter and the rainy season,” Magalefa said.
“I’m so humbled and happy that this project is growing in leaps and bounds and these learners will no longer walk long distances to school barefooted. These gifts will go a long way and I hope that the learners and their parents will appreciate what we have done for them,” Magalefa said.
The school principal, Masala Molete, was excited and said the donation means a lot to the learners as most of them are from poor families.

“We are so very proud and happy that Sammy is giving back to the community, more so, in the rural area. This is part of the poverty alleviation project for the school and you can see from their faces that the learners are happy. We wish him success in this project and hope he assists other schools as well,” Molete said.
Magalefa played professionally as a midfielder in Greece and South Africa. He earned two caps, scored one goal for the South African team and was included in the squad playing in the 2002 Cosafa Cup.
