Cansa supporters get loud in colours

Each year supporters from all over South Africa mark their diaries for one of the country's best-loved events in support of a very worthy cause.

A recent message of support could have been described by many as a combination of bright colours, hair clippers, spray cans and scissors.

Each year, supporters from all over South Africa mark their diaries for one of the country’s best-loved events in support of a very worthy cause, namely, showing solidarity with those affected by cancer.

This is the Cansa Shavathon, and as losing one’s hair is a common side-effect of cancer therapy, shaving one’s head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors. However, colouring one’s hair or paying a ‘Bail Out Fee’ have become options for those who prefer not to shave, or who can’t shave on the day.

This year was no exception, with thousands of supporters shaving, spraying and stenciling their hair for the 15th annual Cansa Shavathon.

On Saturday, 24 February, Key West Shopping was thrilled to have El Cupid Estates and Bond Gallery volunteer to help raise funds for those affected.

According to Piet Pretorius, Master Practitioner at El Cupid, they saw roughly 600 shoppers showing their support throughout the day.

“The people of Krugersdorp are exceptionally eager and willing to give. We are so thankful to everyone who contributed to such a worthy cause.

Cansa is really doing an amazing job, and we are proud to have been part of it for yet another year,” he said.

During the course of the day, Key West was one of hundreds of South African shopping centres that were quickly filled with bright colours and good intentions.
