A lot has happened during the first few months of this year, so we thought we’d provide our readers with a round-up of the most influential stories they might have missed:

• Jonathan from Radio Raps visits Krugersdorp

He has already visited Randfontein and Carletonville. He had been to Secunda. But did you know that he was in Krugersdorp in March? Yes, the East Rand man with the dry sense of humour, Jonathan, visited our town, and his comments were very well received by the community.

A three-minute video shows how Jonathan visits Coronation Dam, chases the ducks, plays on a skateboard, and talks to the dam.

Cyclist killed in hit-and-run incident

Local police have managed to trace and arrest the suspect they have been looking for since Saturday, 24 February, after he/ she allegedly failed to stop after hitting a cyclist who was warming up for the Berge en Dale race.

A statement from Warrant Officer Masedi, the Muldersdrift Police spokesperson, advised that the victim was taken from the scene on Hendrik Potgieter Road to a local hospital, where he was certified dead.

• Local alumnus attacked by elephant

A former Hoërskool Noordheuwel learner, Erick Breedt, was viciously impaled by an elephant while on duty on the Sandringham Reserve just outside Hoedspruit in Limpopo. After the tragic event, he was rushed to hospital where doctors were presented with a set of injuries including a split throat, severe oesophagus and trachea damage, a broken ankle, a jaw broken in three places and damaged vocal cords and facial nerves.

It was also later discovered that his left lung had collapsed and that he will never be able to use his normal voice or swallow normally again. Doctors are in the process of exploring all avenues to restore Erick to his initial condition.

Natalie van der Merwe was quietly sitting in her Biology class when the strangest creature appeared – he was tall, had black fur, big eyes and … angel wings? It was Morilla the Love Gorilla! He was carrying balloons, chocolates and love … all the way from Amanzimtoti.

• Dog suffers due to human cruelty

On Monday, 5 February, animal lovers were shocked by a post put on Facebook by the SPCA Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp. For many Facebook users it served as an eye-opener as to what was really happening to the animals around them on a daily basis. The post contained horrific photos of a dog found as a stray in Kagiso. These photos portray a neglected stray that was found with severe damage to the area around his neck. According to Mandy Cattanach, the manager of the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA, the dog had been chained for an excessive period of time.

• Girl drowns after falling into storm drain

On 29 January, a four-year-old girl drowned after falling into a storm-water drain on Utlhanong Street in Kagiso after the extremely heavy rainfall experienced in Krugersdorp. When paramedics arrived on scene shortly after 4pm, they were informed that the little girl was walking with her mother when she fell into the drain. According to Werner Vermaak, ER24 spokesperson, it is believed that she was swept further down the drain shortly after her fall.

• Krugersdorp War on Drugs riots

Smoke was in the air, people were yelling, and the sound of guns being cocked echoed off the walls of the narrow passageways on Sivewright Street – this was war. The intersection of Luipaard Street and Paardekraal Drive is about 50 metres across, and it was packed with dancing protesters. They had passed the Krugersdorp Police Station, the Town Hall, various car dealers, fast food outlets and shops without touching them. They went straight to the place they believed drugs were being sold.
