The top Easter movies for kids and families

These movies are both epic and family-friendly.

Many residents do not have the luxury of enjoying an Easter break away from all the hustle and bustle. But, with the help of the News, this Easter weekend can still be an enjoyable one for the whole family while getting some quality family time, rest and relaxation in as well.

Here’s a list of family-friendly movies to watch while enjoying some Easter down time:

• Hop (2012)

Another family favourite, Hop.

In this live-action, animation hybrid film, Russell Brand voices EB – the son of the one and only Easter Bunny (Hugh Laurie) – as he comes to terms with his passion for drumming versus his familial obligation to carry on the Easter Bunny name.

On the eve of his coronation as the new Easter Bunny, EB decides instead to sneak away. He hops all the way to Hollywood where he hopes to pursue his dreams of becoming a drummer. The candy-coated world of the Easter Bunny will make your mouth water, and EB’s adventure has just enough comedy and fun for the whole family to enjoy.

• Easter Parade (1948)

Judy Garland and Fred Astaire in the Easter Parade.

In this Easter classic, Don Hewes, played by Fred Astaire, is devastated when his dancing partner, Nadine Hale (Ann Miller), decides to break up their partnership to set out on her own. Determined to prove that he can succeed without her, Astaire confidently vows that he can pick any random chorus girl and make her a star.

He picks Hannah Brown, played by Judy Garland, and the toe-tapping adventure begins. Full of song, dance, and fun, this old-time classic will be an Easter treat forever. Even today’s kids may enjoy that classic charm and appreciate the way films used to be.

• Rise of the Guardians (2012)

This is a family favourite: Rise of the Guardians.

Another family-friendly animated adventure, Rise of the Guardians rounds up all the fantastical fairy tale childhood heroes – Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, Jack Frost, the Sandman, and of course, the Easter Bunny – to fight the evil forces that threaten to engulf the world in darkness. Hugh Jackman voices Bunnymund, an Easter-obsessed Australian rabbit.

For those who choose the more serious side of Easter, without the kids nearby:

• Risen (2016)

This film turns Easter into a gritty, Game of Thrones-style period piece, with Joseph Fiennes starring as a Roman Centurion, Clavius, on the hunt for Jesus’ body after it mysteriously disappears following his crucifixion. Cliff Curtis stars as the groovy Christ himself, in whom Clavius finds salvation. With incredible production value, gore galore, and Britain’s finest actors, it’s the Easter story by way of Gladiator.

• The Ten Commandments (1956)

A movie still from The Ten Commandments.

This classic Biblical epic dramatises the pre-Easter world of the Old Testament and the life of Moses – before Jesus came around. Charlton Heston stars as Moses, bringing the Ten Commandments down from the mountain, while Yul Brynner plays his antagonist, the Egyptian Prince Rameses.

• The Passion of the Christ (2004)

The ultimate Easter movie, but not suitable for children; The Passion of the Christ.

The Passion of the Christ (also known simply as The Passion) is an American biblical drama film directed by Mel Gibson, written by Gibson and Benedict Fitzgerald, and starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus Christ, Maia Morgenstern as the Virgin Mary and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. It depicts the Passion of Jesus largely according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It also draws on pious accounts such as the Friday of Sorrows, along with other devotional writings, such as the reputed Marian apparitions attributed to Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich.

What ever you decide to do this Easter, make sure you enjoy it.
