Local mall turns its eyes to the sky to help owls

The mall has become an official donation point for recycled bottles to help with the Owl Rescue Centre's plastic owl house project.

The Cradlestone Mall marketing team approached the Owl Rescue Centre in Hartbeespoort at the end of January and generously offered to assist them with collecting bottles for their recycled plastic owl house project.

As a result, the shopping centre became one of the Owl Centre’s dedicated drop-off points for plastic bottles.

In March 2017, stunned Cradlestone Mall shoppers once again had their eyes turned up to the sky when a tiny barn owl visited the food court. The mall contacted the Owl Rescue Centre to catch the owl and rehabilitate it. The owl was named Rex after the Jurassic Park theme of the Mall. This is how the mall’ s management came to know of the rescue centre.

The public can take all their plastic bottles to the mall and support efforts to keep the environment clean. Management went even further in their attempts to back the rescue centre, and set up a display area where the public can actually take a selfie with owl wings to create awareness for the campaign.

To date, the mall and its shoppers have collected 25 black bags full of plastic bottles which can be used to mould owl houses.

Cradlestone Mall allowed the Owl Rescue Centre to put up a sign where shoppers can take a photo while wearing owl wings.

There are many collection points in Krugersdorp and surrounding cities where community members can drop off their used plastics.

Community members can also donate money to the project as the expenses for this project far outweigh any income generated by selling of products manufactured from recycling plastic.

“Our aim with the project is not to gain financially from the conservation products, but rather to offer a solution to the plastic waste that lands up in the oceans and environment,” said Danelle Murray, founder of Owl Rescue Centre.
