SPCA to feel the pain when fuel costs increase
"Cruelty does not come to us. Our vehicles are constantly on the road undertaking essential animal welfare."
In the previous financial year, 1 873 cruelty investigations were completed, and 11 514 routine inspections were undertaken involving farm, equine, exotic and wild animals, as well as dogs and cats. In addition, many rescues were undertaken and animals collected.
This was before the Roodepoort SPCA formally took over servicing the Krugersdorp area.
Currently, the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA services 408,72 square kilometres – 161,50 sq km in Roodepoort and 247,72 sq km in the Krugersdorp area.
“This is an enormous task and it is hardly surprising that fuel is an increasingly significant cost to the SPCA. Fuel prices are set to increase in April. This will affect us,” Christine Kuch from the SPCA said.
“Assistance is therefore sought from the community we serve, and an appeal is made – is there a local filling station able to assist us? Our dearest wish would be for individuals or local businesses to come forward and sponsor a tank of fuel a month for each of our vehicles.”
Christine said people think of ‘the SPCA’ as being the place where the kennels are situated, but the work of the SPCA is actually ‘out there’.
“Cruelty does not come to us. Our vehicles are constantly on the road undertaking essential animal welfare work and responding to matters of concern drawn to our attention, as well as making sure that there are regular inspections of facilities where there are animals.”
