Organisation celebrates local teachers

AFFT launched a competition at the participating local schools.

Africa Food for Thought (AFFT), a non-profit, volunteer-driven organisation working in Gauteng, recently launched an exciting new competition aimed at identifying, celebrating and awarding educators in 13 primary schools.

AFFT assists these primary schools, which are situated on the West Rand, by supplementing and supporting the feeding schemes in these schools.

In March, AFFT launched its competition under the banner Impande YeSizwe, which means ‘root of the nation’, in the participating schools. Voting stations were set up and learners were encouraged to vote for teachers who met the following criteria:

• A teacher who is in class every day and well-prepared for every lesson

• A teacher who has inspired me to love the subject he or she is teaching

• A teacher who truly cares for learners

The voting process was also aimed at training senior learners in active citizenship in a fun-filled way.

Learners had a great time participating and voting for their favourite teachers, and AFFT volunteers were on hand to ensure that the voting process went smoothly.

Teachers were also given the opportunity to vote for one another, based on the same criteria. The top three educators selected from each school will be interviewed by a panel before an overall winner is selected in May. Watch this space for future developments!
